(and believe me we could use him around here with all this rain!) It’s July 2nd and I’ve been remiss in posting. We’ve had rain. Oh, boy have we had rain. In fact we could probably use both Moses AND Noah around here.

Weather Forecasting in Noah's Day

Ok, maybe this is not rain of biblical proportions, but we’ve only seen blue sky for parts of nine days since June 1st. Anyway you look at it, it’s not what I’ve come to expect from summer. Yesterday the mercury (there’s an arcane expression) topped out at 61 degrees. Come on now, it’s July!!!

All of that being said, I’ve found myself moving at a different pace this summer than most. Maybe it’s got something to do with the weather, but I’m taking things as they come more. What’s the old saying, everyone complains about the weather…..

My brother-in-law says there’s no such thing as bad weather, there’s only weather. I’m working to get there.

In many ways I suspect that’s what Jesus had in mind with the whole, ‘give us today our daily bread’ and ‘thy will be done’ sort of talk. Choosing contentment over contempt is a chore and we wound ourselves in unnecessary ways when we spend more energy being disgruntled than we do in simply being present and taking what is as the gift that it is (hmmm, is that being ‘gruntled’?).

I’ve not made a complete peace with the weather in New England these past weeks, but I do find Gershwin’s claim from Porgy and Bess ringing more true than I had thought. It is summertime and the living’s as easy as I let it be.

May we all have the grace to take our days on their own terms and dare to be reasonably happy in this life so that we can be supremely happy in the next (with a nod to the Serenity Prayer, whether it be Niebuhr’s or not!).
